2 Peter 2:4 — angels cast into Tartarus

2 Peter 2:4

"For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell (Greek: tartarōsas) and committed them to chains of deepest darkness to be kept until the judgment..." — 2 Pet 2:4 (NRSV)

The Greek verb ταρταρώσας (only here in the NT) maps onto the Watchers being cast into the pit/abyss in 1 En 10. The "chains of deepest darkness" echo 1 En 10:4–6 (Raphael binds Azazel in darkness and covers his face).

Note

2 Peter and Jude share material; most modern scholarship sees 2 Peter as later, drawing on Jude. Both presuppose the Watchers myth.
