1 Enoch 81

And he said unto me: 'Observe, Enoch, these heavenly tablets, And read what is written thereon, And mark every individual fact.' 2 And I observed the heavenly tablets, and read everything which was written (thereon) and understood everything, and read the book of all the deeds of mankind, and of all the children of flesh that shall be upon the earth to the remotest generations.

Now, my son Mathusala, all these things I speak unto thee, and write for thee. To thee I have revealed all, and have given thee books of everything.

And he said to me : "0 Enoch, contemplate the writing of the tablets of heaven, and read what 17* 198 THE BOOK OF ENOCH. is written thereon, and learn each ono."

Preserve, my son Mathusala, the books written by thy father; [^l1] that thou mayest transmit them to future generations.

And 1 contemplated everything on these tablets of heaven, and read everything that was written, and learned everything and read the book and everything that was written in it, all the deeds of men and all the children of flesh who will he on the earth to the generation of eternity.

And forthwith I blessed the great Lord the King of glory for ever, in that He has made all the works of the world, And I extolled the Lord because of His patience, And blessed Him because of the children of men.

Wisdom have I given to thee, to thy children, and thy posterity, that they may transmit to their children, for generations for ever, this wisdom in their thoughts; and that those who comprehend it may not slumber, but hear with their ears; that they may learn this wisdom, and be deemed worthy of eating *this* wholesome food.

And then I immediately blessed the Lord and the everlasting King of glory, tliat he had made all the things of the earth, and I blessed the Lord on account of his patience, and blessed him on account of the children of the world.

And after that I said: 'Blessed is the man who dies in righteousness and goodness, Concerning whom there is no book of unrighteousness written, And against whom no day of judgement shall be found.'

Blessed are all the righteous; blessed all who walk in *the paths of* righteousness; in whom no crime *is found*, as in sinners, when all their days are numbered.

And at that time I said: " Happy the man who dies as a just and good one, concerning whom there is no book of iniquity written, and against whom no blame is found."

And those seven holy ones brought me^a and placed me on the earth before the door of my house, and said to me: 'Declare everything to thy son Methuselah, and show to all thy children that no flesh is righteous in the sight of the Lord, for He is their Creator.

With respect to the progress of the sun in heaven, it enters and goes out of each gate for thirty days, with the leaders of the thousand classes of the stars; with four which are added, and appertain to the four quarters of the year, which conduct them, and accompany them at four periods.

And those three holy ones brought me and placed me on the earth before the door of my house and said to me: " Announce everything to thy son Methulselah, and show to all thy children that no flesh is just before the Lord, for he has created them.

One year we will leave thee with thy son, till thou givest thy (last) commands, that thou mayest teach thy children and record (it) for them, and testify to all thy children; and in the second year they shall take thee from their midst.

Respecting these, men greatly err, and do not compute them in the computation of every age; for they greatly err respecting them; nor do men know accurately that they are in the computation of the year. But indeed these are marked down [^l1] for ever; one in the first gate, one in the third, one in the fourth, and one in the sixth:

One year we will leave thee with thy children, till thou art again strengthened, that thou mayest teach thy children and write for tliem, and mayest testify before them all, thy children ; and in the second year they will lift thee up out of their midst.

Let thy heart be strong, For the good shall announce righteousness to the good; The righteous with the righteous shall rejoice, And shall offer congratulation to one another.

So that the year is completed in three hundred and sixty-four days.

Let thy heart be strong, for the good will announce justice to the good, the just will rejoice with the just and w^ill congratulate themselves among themselves.

But the sinners shall die with the sinners, And the apostate go down with the apostate.

Truly has been stated, [^l2] and accurately has been computed that which is marked down; for the luminaries, the months, the fixed periods, the years, and the days, Uriel has explained to me, and communicated to me; [^l3] whom the Lord of all creation, on my account, commanded (according to the might of heaven, and the power which it possesses both by night and by day) to explain *the laws of* light to man, of the sun, moon, and stars, and of all the powers of heaven, which are turned with their respective orbs.

But the sinner will die with the sinner, and the renegade sink down with the renegade.

And those who practice righteousness shall die on account of the deeds of men, And be taken away on account of the doings of the godless.'

This is the ordinance of the stars, which set in their places, in their seasons, in their periods, in their days, and in their months.

And those who do justice will die on account of the deeds of men, and will be gathered in on account of the deeds of the impious."

And in those days they ceased to speak to me, and I came to my people, blessing the Lord of the world.

These are the names of those who conduct them, who watch and enter in their seasons, according to their ordinance in their periods, in their months, in *the times of* their influence, and in their stations.
