1 Enoch 89

And one of those four went to that white bull and instructed him in a secret^a, without his being terrified: he was born a bull and became a man, and built for himself a great vessel^b and dwelt thereon; and three bulls dwelt with him in that vessel and they were covered in.

And I observed during the time, that thus thirty-seven [^l1] shepherds were overlooking, all of whom finished in their respective periods as the first. Others then received them into their hands, that they might overlook them in their respective periods, every shepherd in his own period.

And one of those four went to that white bullock, and taught him a mystery while he was tremTHE BOOK OF ENOCH. 213 bling ; he was born a bullock, and became a man, and he made for himself a large vessel, and lived in it ; and three bullocks lived with him in that vessel, and it was covered over above them.

And again I raised mine eyes towards heaven and saw a lofty roof, with seven water torrents thereon, and those torrents flowed with much water into an enclosure.

Afterwards I saw in the vision, that all the birds of heaven arrived; eagles, the avest, kites and ravens. The eagle instructed them all.

And I again raised my eyes towards heaven, and saw a high roof and seven sluices to it ; and those sluices emptied much water into a yard.

And I saw again, and behold fountains were opened on the surface of that great enclosure, and that water began to swell and rise upon the surface, and I saw that enclosure till all its surface was covered with water.

They began to devour the sheep, to peck out their eyes, and to eat up their bodies.

And I saw again, and behold fountains were opened on the earth, in tliat great yard ; and that water began to swell, and to be lifted above the land, and caused that yard to disappear, until all the land was covered with water.

And the water, the darkness, and mist increased upon it; and as I looked at the height of that water, that water had risen above the height of that enclosure, and was streaming over that enclosure, and it stood upon the earth.

The sheep then cried out; for their bodies were devoured by the birds.

And the water and the darkness and the fog increased over it ; and as I looked at the lieight of this water, this water was elevated over that yard, and emptied over the yard, and stood on the earth.

And all the cattle of that enclosure were gathered together until I saw how they sank and were swallowed up and perished in that water.

I also cried out, and groaned in my sleep against that shepherd which overlooked the flock.

And all the bullocks which were in the yard were collected, so that I immediately saw how they sank down and came to nauglit, and were destroyed in that water.

But that vessel floated on the water, while all the oxen and elephants and camels and asses sank to the bottom with all the animals, so that I could no longer see them, and they were not able to escape, (but) perished and sank into the depths.

And I looked, while the sheep were eaten up by the dogs, by the eagles, and by the kites. They neither left them their body, nor their skin, nor their muscles, until their bones alone remained; until their bones fell upon the ground. And the sheep became diminished.

But that vessel swam on the water, and all the bullocks and elephants and camels and asses on the earth sank down, and all tlie animals ; and I was not able to see them, and they were unable to come out, but were destroyed, and sank down into the abyss.

And again I saw in the vision till those water torrents were removed from that high roof, and the chasms of the earth were levelled up and other abysses were opened.

I observed likewise during the time, that twenty-three shepherds [^l2] were overlooking; who completed in their respective periods fifty-eight periods.

And again I saw in the vision till those sluices were put away from that high roof, and the fountains of the earth dried up, and other abysses were opened.

Then the water began to run down into these, till the earth became visible; but that vessel settled on the earth, and the darkness retired and light appeared.

Then were small lambs born of those white sheep; who began to open their eyes and to see, crying out to the sheep.

Then the water began to run into these till the earth became uncovered ; but that vessel reached the earth, and the darkness retreated, and it became light.

But that white bull which had become a man came out of that vessel, and the three bulls with him^a, and one of those three was white like that bull, and one of them was red as blood, and one black: and that white bull departed from them. LXXXIX. 10-

The sheep, however, cried not out to them, neither did they hear what they uttered to them; but were deaf, blind, and obdurate in the greatest degrees.

But that white bullock, which had become a man, came out of that vessel, and the three bullocks with him ; and one of the three bullocks was white, similar to that [first] l)ullock, and one of them was red like blood, and one black ; and that one, the white bullock, went away 214 THE BOOK OF ENOCH. from them.

And they began to bring forth beasts of the field and birds, so that there arose different genera: lions, tigers, wolves, dogs, hyenas, wild boars, foxes, squirrels, swine, falcons, vultures, kites, eagles, and ravens; and among them was born a white bull.

I saw in the vision that ravens flew down upon those lambs;

And tliey began to bring forth animals of tlie desert and birds, so that there arose out of them a varied diversity of kinds : lions and pantliers and dogs and wolves and lijenas and wild boars and foxes and squirrels and hogs and falcons and vultures and buzzards and eagles and crows ; and among them was born a white bullock.

And they began to bite one another; but that white bull which was born amongst them begat a wild ass and a white bull with it, and the wild asses multiplied.

That they seized one of them; and that tearing the sheep in pieces, they devoured them.

And the Lord brought the eleven sheep to live with it, and to pasture with it among the wolves ; and they increased, and became many herd.« jf slieep.

But that bull which was born from him begat a black wild boar and a white sheep; and the former begat many boars, but that sheep begat twelve shee. And when those twelve sheep^a had grown, they gave up one of them to the asses, and those asses again gave up that sheep to the wolves, and that sheep grew up among the wolves.

I saw also, that horns grew upon those lambs; and that the ravens lighted down upon their horns.

But that bull which was born from him begat a black wild boar and a white sheep ; and this wild boar begat many boars, but that sheep produced twelve sheep.

I saw, too, that a large horn sprouted out on an animal [^l1] among the sheep, and that their eyes were opened.

And when these twelve slieep had grown, tbey gave one of them to the asses, and these asses then gave that sheep to the wolves, and that sheep grew up among the wolves.

And the Lord brought the eleven sheep to live with it and to pasture with it among the wolves: and they multiplied and became many flocks of shee. And the wolves began to fear them, and they oppressed them until they destroyed their little ones, and they cast their young into a river of much water: but those sheep began to cry aloud on account of their little ones, and to complain unto their Lord.

He looked at them. Their eyes were wide open; and he cried out to them.

Then the dabela [^l2] saw him; all of whom ran to him.

And the wolves began to fear, and oppressed them till they [the wolves] finally destroyed their [i.e. the sheep's] young, and threw their young into a stream of much water ; but those sheep began to cry aloud, on account of their young, before the Lord.

And a sheep which had been saved from the wolves fled and escaped to the wild asses; and I saw the sheep how they lamented and cried, and besought their Lord with all their might, till that Lord of the sheep descended at the voice of the sheep from a lofty abode, and came to them and pastured them.

And besides this, all the eagles, the avest, the ravens and the kites, were still carrying off the sheep, flying down upon them, and devouring them. The sheep were silent, but the dabela lamented and cried out.

And a sheep which had been saved from the wolves fled, and escaped to the wild asses ; and I saw the sheep as they lamented and cried and asked their Lord with all their power, till that Lord of the sheep descended at the voice of the slieep from his high abode, and came and looked after them.

And He called that sheep which had escaped the wolves, and spake with it concerning the wolves that it should admonish them not to touch the shee. And the sheep went to the wolves according to the word of the Lord, and another sheep met it and went with it, and the two went and entered together into the assembly of those wolves, and spake with them and admonished them not to touch the sheep from henceforth.

Then the ravens contended, and struggled with them.

And he called to that sheep which had escaped from the wolves, and spoke with it concerning the wolves, that it should counsel them not to touch the sheep.

They wished among them to break his horn; but they prevailed not over him.

And that sheep went to the wolves by the voice of the Lord ; THE BOOK OF ENOCH. 215 and another sheep met that sheep, and went with it, and these two came together to the abode of those wolves, and spoke with them, and admonished them tliat henceforth they should not touch the sheep.

And thereupon I saw the wolves, and how they oppressed the sheep exceedingly with all their power; and the sheep cried aloud.

I looked on them, until the shepherds, the eagles, the avest, and the kites came.

And then I saw the wolves, and how they exceedingly oppressed the slieep with all their power ; and the sheep cried aloud.

And the Lord came to the sheep and they began to smite those wolves: and the wolves began to make lamentation; but the sheep became quiet and forthwith ceased to cry out.

Who cried out to the ravens to break the horn of the dabela; to contend with him; and to kill him. But he struggled with them, and cried out, that help might come to him.

And their Lord came to the sheep, and began to beat those wolves, and the wolves began to lament ; but tlie sheep became quiet, and from then on did not cry.

And I saw the sheep till they departed from amongst the wolves; but the eyes of the wolves were blinded, and those wolves departed in pursuit of the sheep with all their power.

Then I perceived that the man came who had written down the names of the shepherds, and who ascended up before the Lord of the sheep.

And 1 saw the sheep till they had gone away from the wolves, and the wolves were blinded as to their eyes, and those wolves went out that they might follow the sheep with all their power.

And the Lord of the sheep went with them, as their leader, and all His sheep followed Him: and his face was dazzling and glorious and terrible to behold.

He brought assistance, and caused every one to see him descending to the help of the dabela.

And the Lord of the sheep went with them, leading them, and all the sheep followed him ; and his face was shining, and his appearance terrible and sublime.

But the wolves began to pursue those sheep till they reached a sea of water.

I perceived likewise that the Lord of the sheep came to them in wrath, while all those who saw him fled away; all fell down in his tabernacle before his face; while all the eagles, the avest, ravens, and kites assembled, and brought with them all the sheep of the field.

But the wolves commenced to follow those sheep till they reached them in a sea of water.

And that sea was divided, and the water stood on this side and on that before their face, and their Lord led them and placed Himself between them and the wolves.

All came together, and strove to break the horn of the dabela.

And this sea of water was divided, and the water stood from this side and from that before their faces ; and their Lord leading them stood also between them and the wolves.

And as those wolves did not yet see the sheep, they proceeded into the midst of that sea, and the wolves followed the sheep, and [those wolves] ran after them into that sea.

Then I saw, that the man, who wrote the book at the word of the Lord, opened the book of destruction, of that destruction which the last twelve shepherds [^l1] wrought; and pointed out before the Lord of the sheep, that they destroyed more than those who preceded them.

And as those wolves did not yet see the sheep, they went into the middle of the sea of water ; and the wolves followed the sheep, and ran after them into the sea of water.

And when they saw the Lord of the sheep, they turned to flee before His face, but that sea gathered itself together, and became as it had been created, and the water swelled and rose till it covered those wolves.

I saw also that the Lord of the sheep came to them, and taking in his hand the sceptre of his wrath seized the earth, which became rent asunder; while all the beasts and birds of heaven fell from the sheep, and sunk into the earth, which closed over them.

And when they saw the Lord of the sheep they turned that they might flee from before his face ; but this sea of water gathered itself together, suddenly took again its own character, and the water swelled and rose till it covered those wolves.

And I saw till all the wolves who pursued those sheep perished and were drowned. LXXXIX. 28-

I saw, too, that a large sword was given to the sheep, who went forth against all the beasts of the field to slay them.

And I saw till all the wolves which had followed those sheep were destroyed, and sank down.

But the sheep escaped from that water and went forth into a wilderness, where there was no water and no grass; and they began to open their eyes and to see; and I saw the Lord of the sheep pasturing them and giving them water and grass, and that sheep going and leading them.

But all the beasts and birds of heaven fled away from before their face.

But the sheep escaped from that water, and went into the desert, where there was no water and no grass ; and they began to open their eyes and to 216 THE BOOK OF ENOCH. ^ see ; and I saw the Lord of the sheep pasturing them and givuig them water and grass, and that [former] sheep going and leading them.

And that sheep ascended to the summit of that lofty rock, and the Lord of the sheep sent it to them.

And I saw a throne erected in a delectable land;

And this slieep ascended to the lieight of a higli rock, and the Lord of the sheep sent it to them. oO. And after tliat I saw the Lord of the sheep as he stood hefore them ; and his appearance was terrible and powerful, and all those sheep saw him, and were afraid before his face.

And after that I saw the Lord of the sheep who stood before them, and His appearance was great and terrible and majestic, and all those sheep saw Him and were afraid before His face.

Upon this sat the Lord of the sheep, who received all the sealed books;

And they all feared and trembled because of Him, and they cried to that sheep with them [which was amongst them]: "We are not able to stand before our Lord or to behold Him."

And that sheep which led them again ascended to the summit of that rock, but the sheep began to be blinded and to wander from the way which he had showed them, but that sheep wot not thereof.

Then the Lord called the first seven white ones, and commanded them to bring before him the first of the first stars, which preceded the stars whose form partly resembled that of horses; the first star, which fell down first; and they brought them all before him.

And that sheep which led them returned, and ascended to the height of that rock ; but the sheep began to be blinded as to their eyes, and erred from the path which it had showed to them; but this sheep did not know it.

And the Lord of the sheep was wrathful exceedingly against them, and that sheep discovered it, and went down from the summit of the rock, and came to the sheep, and found the greatest part of them blinded and fallen away.

And he spoke to the man who wrote in his presence, who was one of the seven white ones, saying, Take those seventy shepherds, to whom I delivered up the sheep, and who receiving them killed more of them than I commanded. Behold, I saw them all bound, and all standing before him. First came on the trial of the stars, which, being judged, and found guilty, went to the place of punishment. They thrust them into *a place*, deep, and full of flaming fire, and full of pillars of fire. Then the seventy shepherds were judged, and being found guilty, were thrust into the flaming abyss.

And the Lord of the sheep was enraged over them greatly ; and that sheep discovered it, and descended from the height of the rock, and came to the sheep, and found the greater part of them blinded as to their eyes, and erring from his path.

And when they saw it they feared and trembled at its presence, and desired to return to their folds.

At that time likewise I perceived, that one abyss was thus opened in the midst of the earth, which was full of fire.

And as they saw it they feared and trembled before its face, and desired to return to their folds.

And that sheep took other sheep with it, and came to those sheep which had fallen away, and began to slay them; and the sheep feared its presence, and thus that sheep brought back those sheep that had fallen away, and they returned to their folds.

And to this were brought the blind sheep; which being judged, and found guilty, were all thrust into that abyss of fire on the earth, and burnt.

And that sheep took other sheep with it, and came to those erring sheep ; and then it began to kill them, and the sheep feared its countenance ; and thus that sheep brought back those erring sheep, and they returned to their folds.

And I saw in this vision till that sheep became a man and built a house for the Lord of the sheep, and placed all the sheep in that house.

The abyss was on the right of that house.

And I saw there in the vision till that sheep became a man, and built the Lord of the sheep a house, and placed all the sheep in that house.

And I saw till this sheep which had met that sheep which led them fell asleep: and I saw till all the great sheep perished and little ones arose in their place, and they came to a pasture, and approached a stream of water.

And I saw the sheep burning, and their bones consuming.

And I saw till that sheep that had met the sheep which led the sheep reposed [in death] ; and I saw till all the large sheep were destroyed, and small ones arose in their places ; and they THE BOOK OF ENOCH. 217 came to a pasture, and approached a stream of water.

Then that sheep, their leader which had become a man, withdrew from them and fell asleep, and all the sheep sought it and cried over it with a great crying.

I stood beholding him immerge that ancient house, while they brought out its pillars, every plant in it, and the ivory infolding it. They brought it out, and deposited it in a place on the right side of the earth.

And this sheep wliich led them, and which became a man, was separated from them, and reposed [in deatlj] ; and all the sheep sought it, and cried over it exceedingly.

And I saw till they left off crying for that sheep and crossed that stream of water, and there arose the two sheep as leaders in the place of those which had led them and fallen asleep (lit. "had fallen asleep and led them").

I also saw, that the Lord of the sheep produced a new house, great, and loftier than the former, which he bounded by the former circular spot. All its pillars were new, and its ivory new, as well as more abundant than the former ancient *ivory*, which he had brought out.

And I saw till they became quiet from their crying over this sheep, and they crossed that stream of water ; and there always arose other sheep that led them in the place of those which had departed, and led them.

And I saw till the sheep came to a goodly place, and a pleasant and glorious land, and I saw till those sheep were satisfied; and that house stood amongst them in the pleasant land. LXXXIX. 41-

And while all the sheep which were left were in the midst of it, all the beasts of the earth, and all the birds of heaven, fell down and worshipped them, petitioning them, and obeying them in everything.

And I saw the sheep until they came into a good place, and into a pleasant and glorious land ; and I saw these sheep till they were satisfied ; but the house stood among them in the beautiful land.

And sometimes their eyes were opened, and sometimes blinded, till another sheep arose and led them and brought them all back, and their eyes were opened.

Then those three, who were clothed in white, and who, holding me by my hand, had before caused me to ascend, while the hand of him *who* spoke held me; raised me up, and placed me in the midst of the sheep, before the judgment took place.

And sometimes their eyes were opened, and sometimes they were blinded, till another sheep arose, and led them, and conducted them all back, and their eyes were opened.

And the dogs and the foxes and the wild boars began to devour those sheep till the Lord of the sheep raised up [another sheep] a ram from their midst, which led them.

The sheep were all white, with wool long and pure. Then all who had perished, and had been destroyed, every beast of the field, and every bird of heaven, assembled in that house: while the Lord of the sheep rejoiced with great joy, because all were good, and had come back again to his dwelling.

And the dogs and the foxes and the wild boars began to devour those sheep till another sheep arose, a buck, in their midst, wliich led them.

And that ram began to butt on either side those dogs, foxes, and wild boars till he had destroyed them †all†.

And I saw that they laid down the sword which had been given to the sheep, and returned it to his house, sealing it up in the presence of the Lord.

And this buck began to butt those dogs and those foxes and those wild boars from both sides, till he had destroyed them all.

And that sheep whose eyes were opened saw that ram, which was amongst the sheep, till it †forsook its glory† and began to butt those sheep, and trampled upon them, and behaved itself unseemly.

All the sheep would have been inclosed in that house, had it been capable of containing them; [^l1] and the eyes of all were open, gazing on the good One; nor was there one among them who did not behold him.

And that sheep had its eyes opened, and saw this buck which was among the sheep departing from his honor, and beginning to butt those sheep, and to tramp on them, and to walk unseemly.

And the Lord of the sheep sent the lamb to another lamb and raised it to being a ram and leader of the sheep instead of that ram which had †forsaken its glory†.

I likewise perceived that the house was large, wide, and extremely full. I saw, too, that a white cow was born, whose horns were great; and that all the beasts of the field, and all the birds of heaven, were alarmed at him, and entreated him at all times.

And the Lord of the sheep sent that sheep to another sheep, and exalted it to become a buck, and to lead the sheep in the place of that sheep which had deserted his lionor.

And it went to it and spake to it alone, and raised it to being a ram, and made it the prince and leader of the sheep; but during all these things those dogs oppressed the shee. And the first ram pursued that second ram, and that second ram arose and fled before it; and I saw till those dogs pulled down the first ram.

Then I saw that the nature of all of them was changed, and that they became white cows;

And it went to it, and spoke to it alone, and elevated it to become a buck, and made it the prince and leader of the sheep ; but during all that time those dogs oppressed the sheep.

And that the first, *who* was in the midst of them, spoke, [^l1] when that word became a large beast, upon the head of which were great and black horns;

And that second ram arose and led the [little] shee. And those sheep grew and multiplied; but all the dogs, and foxes, and wild boars feared and fled before it, and that ram butted and killed the wild beasts, and those wild beasts had no longer any power among the sheep and robbed them no more of ought. 48b. And that ram begat many sheep and fell asleep; and a little sheep became ram in its stead, and became prince and leader of those shee. And that house became great and broad, and it was built for those sheep: (and) a tower lofty and great was built on the house for the Lord of the sheep, and that house was low, but the tower was elevated and lofty, and the Lord of the sheep stood on that tower and they offered a full table before Him. LXXXIX. 51-

And that second buck arose, and led the smaller sheep, and this buck begat many sheep, and reposed [in death] ; and a small sheep became the buck in its place, and was the prince and leader of those sheep.

I lay down in the midst of them: I awoke; and saw the whole. This is the vision which I saw, lying down and waking. Then I blessed the Lord of righteousness, and gave glory to Him.

And those sheep grew and increased ; and the dogs and the foxes and the wild boars were afraid, and fled before it ; and that buck butted and killed all the wild beasts, and those wild beasts liad no more power among the sheep, and never robbed them of anytliing.

From the Time of the Judges till the Building of the Temple.

Afterwards I wept abundantly, nor did my tears cease, so that I became incapable of enduring it. While I was looking on, they flowed [^l2] on account of what I saw; for all was come and gone by; every individual circumstance respecting the conduct of mankind was seen by me.

And that house became great and Ijroad, and a large tower was built on that house of the Lord of the sheep for those sheep; and the house was low, l)ut the tower was high and broad ; and tlie Lord of the sheep stood on tliat tower, and tliey placed a full table before him.

And again I saw those sheep that they again erred and went many ways, and forsook that their house, and the Lord of the sheep called some from amongst the sheep and sent them to the sheep, but the sheep began to slay them.

In that night I remembered my former dream; and therefore wept and was troubled, because I had seen that vision.

And I again saw those sheep that they again erred, and went many ways, and left tlieir house ; and the Lord of the sheep called some from among them, and sent them to the sheep, but tlie sheep began to kill them.

And one of them was saved and was not slain, and it sped away and cried aloud over the sheep; and they sought to slay it, but the Lord of the sheep saved it from the sheep, and brought it up to me, and caused it to dwell there.
